The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to help certified divers gain more experience under instructor guidance. It introduces you to different types of diving while improving your confidence, awareness, buoyancy, navigation, and comfort underwater.
This is the ideal next course after Open Water if you want to dive deeper, explore more dive sites, improve your skills, and become a more capable buddy.
PADI’s Advanced Open Water course includes five Adventure Dives. The Deep Dive and Underwater Navigation Dive are required, and the remaining three dives are selected from available Adventure Dive options.

Course Requirements
To join the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course, students should:
- Be a certified PADI Open Water Diver or hold an equivalent certification from another recognised agency
- Be medically fit to dive
- Complete the required medical questionnaire
- Provide a PADI / certification number or proof of certification
- Be comfortable in local ocean diving conditions
The course is designed as the next step after Open Water, and PADI describes it as continuing training that builds skills and introduces different specialty-style dives.

After Certification
After completing the Advanced Open Water Diver course, divers are generally qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 metres / 100 feet, within training and experience limits. PADI’s Advanced Open Water FAQ notes a depth qualification of 30 m / 100 ft.
